Academic Eligibility
Baylor's Deferred Recruitment Model
At Baylor, academic achievement is a cornerstone of the fraternity and sorority experience. Our community is built on the belief that students thrive when they are first established academically, socially, and spiritually before joining a fraternity or sorority. That belief is reflected in Baylor’s deferred recruitment model, which intentionally requires students to spend time on campus before becoming eligible for membership.
Unlike campuses where students join immediately upon arrival, Baylor encourages students to use their first semester to focus on the transition to college, build meaningful relationships, explore campus involvement opportunities, and establish a strong academic foundation. This approach helps students make more informed decisions about fraternity and sorority membership, while ensuring that chapters welcome students who have demonstrated success in Baylor’s rigorous academic environment.
By requiring students to complete Baylor coursework before joining, deferred recruitment supports the long-term success of both students and chapters. It allows potential new members to identify organizations that align with their values, interests, and goals while prioritizing what matters most—their education.
First-Year Student Eligibility
To participate in a fraternity or sorority recruitment or intake process, first-year students must:
Complete 12 Baylor GPA credit hours
Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.67 AND
Earn a current GPA of 2.00 or higher
While these are Baylor’s minimum requirements, many fraternities and sororities establish academic standards that exceed university expectations. Students are encouraged to research individual chapter requirements as they explore membership opportunities.

Transfer Student Eligibility
A student is classified as a transfer student if they have attended a college, university, or junior college during a fall or spring semester after graduating from high school. Students are only considered for transfer eligibility if they are attempting to join in their first semester following their transfer. Once a student completes their first semester at Baylor, their eligibility status is determined based on their Baylor GPA and hours.
To be eligible for fraternity or sorority membership, transfer students must:
Complete at least 24 transferable credit hours AND
Earn a minimum transfer GPA of 3.0
Additional information:
Dual-credit and Advanced Placement (AP) hours do not count toward transfer-hour eligibility requirements.
GPAs are not rounded up when determining eligibility.
Eligibility Appeals
Students who do not meet Baylor’s minimum eligibility requirements may submit an appeal for consideration. Appeals are reviewed by Fraternity & Sorority Life staff, and students will be notified once a decision has been reached.
It is important to note that an approved appeal does not guarantee membership eligibility with a particular chapter. Many fraternities and sororities maintain higher academic standards than the university minimums and make independent membership decisions during recruitment and intake processes.
