Baylor's Deferred Recruitment Model
At Baylor, we believe students are most successful when they have time to establish themselves academically, socially, and personally before joining a fraternity or sorority. For that reason, Baylor utilizes a deferred recruitment model, which requires students to complete coursework and meet university eligibility standards before pursuing membership.
For prospective students and parents, one of the greatest benefits of deferred recruitment is the opportunity it gives students to fully experience their first semester at Baylor.
Without the immediate pressure of joining a fraternity or sorority, students are able to focus on the transition to college life. They can devote their energy to academics, establish healthy routines, build friendships in their residence halls and classes, and explore the many opportunities Baylor offers before making a membership commitment.
Deferred recruitment also encourages students to get involved across campus. During their first semester, students can participate in student organizations, service opportunities, campus traditions, faith-based communities, and leadership experiences that help them discover their interests and strengths. These experiences often provide valuable perspective when deciding whether fraternity or sorority membership is the right fit and which organization aligns best with their values and goals.
As a result, students enter the recruitment process with a better understanding of themselves, a stronger connection to the Baylor community, and a proven record of academic success. This foundation helps students make more informed decisions and positions them for a positive and successful fraternity or sorority experience.
An additional benefit of deferred recruitment is that students have time to observe chapters in action before making a membership decision. Throughout their first semester, they can attend campus events, interact with chapter members, and see how organizations contribute to the Baylor community. This firsthand experience helps students make more informed choices about which chapter best aligns with their values, interests, and goals, leading to stronger chapter-member fit and a more meaningful membership experience.
